Fun at the Farmers' Market

It's finally time for the Farmers' Markets again in Vermont! I don't know how we get along without them the rest of the year, but with the help of a few great health food stores in town, we do just fine. We have so many fantastic small organic farms who send their amazing products for us to buy. (I know I am raving but if you haven't seen a Vermont Farmers' Market, you are really missing something special: fresh green garlic, fingerling potatoes, herb and flower plants, homemade breads and cheeses, local wines, pies and cookies, funky live music with little kids dancing around...) When I am shopping at these markets, I often think how the word "organic" is thrown about when describing jewelry. To me, it means that the jewelry was made and finished at least partially by hand and with design inspired by natural forms: not perfectly round and smooth, maybe some color variations and gemstones chosen more for their individual quirks and shapes. It means that your jewelry will have its own unique qualities and be yours alone. You will get to know the way the sun shines across your rainbow moonstone or how the matrix in your turquoise is its own "fingerprint." It is truly a joy to select this type of jewelry for SilveradoVermont. Take a look at the new designs from Avindy for especially great summertime jewelry. And don't forget to support your own local Farmers' Markets!

Special Gifts

I have a gold bangle bracelet that I did not like when I received it as a gift on my 16th birthday from my beloved late grandmother. I was completely into a hippie phase; the bracelet seemed so "establishment" and I never wore it until I discovered it in my jewelry box in my twenties. Now I absolutely treasure it and wear it all the time! It is such a special piece of jewelry because I see her in all the grandparents shopping for gifts for their grandchildren, asking for advice on what the "young people" want that isn't money or electronics. They want to find something that fulfills so many of their hopes for the perfect gift: a piece of jewelry that will be worn, cherished, and become something to pass down to their own children someday. I feel humbled that my grandmother, who had many other grandchildren, shopped for especially for me, and I hope I didn't seem ungrateful at the time she presented it to me.

I think so carefully about the type of jewelry we have in our display cases at this time of the year because of the importance of the gift buying for graduations, weddings, and birthdays. Some of the favorites which I think stand out as special gifts can be seen in our new Special Occasions section. Thanks for reading this blog and I hope all of your gifts you give become as special as my gold bangle is to me now.

Silverado's Moms

Another great Mother's Day weekend has passed, and we are thankful to our many loyal customers who chose us again as the place to get special gifts for the Moms in their lives! The store literally buzzed with shoppers and families; it was great to re-visit with everyone and enjoy the Spring weather (even though it snowed Saturday morning!). Our local prom was Saturday night and many girls wore great earrings (thanks to Catherine Popesco's line of fabulous jewelry) and necklaces from our shop. It is really wonderful to share in these special times with our customers and friends. Now we are busy helping brides-to-be with their jewelry along with gifts for their bridesmaids. We have just received so many beautiful new pieces of jewelry over the last week, so we are busy photographing them for the website. We'll feature them all in the New Arrivals page as we get them added.
Thanks again from all of us for the continued business...we are so appreciative and honored to serve all of you who shop with us.

feelin' good

My very talented singer/songwriter daughter Jes Hudak covers a song by Nina Simone called "Feelin' Good" and she does an amazing job...(please check her out on youtube); many times I would love to play the song over and over in the store when women are being rough on their appearances in front of the mirrors.  My wish is that these gorgeous women would appreciate their individual features as beautiful and unique: that is what makes us so interesting!  So often a women tries on a piece of jewelry and then looks at herself in the mirror and only sees the "flaws," not the overall beauty that is her own special self.   And here in Vermont we are very active; that's a great part of why we are up in these mountains.  Our hair blows around constantly, our noses get red in the cold, our skin gets dry, our boots dirty.  So what!

Please, when you look in the mirror to check out how you look in those great new hoop earrings, see yourself positively: remind yourself of how much others depend on you for care and support and fun, too.  Only YOU can be YOU; the one your family and friends loves.  So celebrate yourself and feel good!

Jane Diaz is perfect for Spring

Mud season is officially in full swing in Vermont...this morning my dogs romped gleefully in lots of the black slimy stuff for hours.  Luckily for me they don't object to early morning cold water hose baths before I leave for work; in fact they love it!  Up here we are looking forward to the first glimpses of green sprouts among winter's leftover leaves and such on the forest floor.  But the skiing is still in full swing, although the skiers and riders are wearing shorts and t-shirts.  Fun for all in the mountains at this time of year.

I've noticed at Silverado that the customers are finally asking for "bigger" jewelry now that they are out of the heavy layers of fleece and down they've been swaddled in for the past 4 months. A favorite this past weekend was Jane Diaz' perenniel favorite filigree chandelier earrings.

Try them and you'll instantly feel like putting up your hair, sitting back in a beach chair, and lapping up some sun!
